Danish Jews in Swedish exile 1943-45

01/12/23

Project

In 2023, the Danish Jewish Museum was granted research funding for a project that will shed light on the exile of Danish Jews in Sweden in 1943-45. This has long been an open collection and research issue at the museum, and with the allocation of the research funding, it was possible to work further and more focused on this part of the museum's collection.

The project centered on a number of unique photo albums held by the Danish Jewish Museum, documenting Danish Jews' refugee stay in Sweden and their memories of it. At the same time, a collaboration was initiated with the Danish Embassy in Tel Aviv to collect 20 new testimonies from Danish Jews living in Israel about their memories of World War II.

The project is supported by pool funds from the Danish Agency for Palaces and Culture and is carried out in collaboration between the Danish Jewish Museum and local actors in the ten cities with burial grounds.

The project ran from late 2023 to early 2025.
